Primary Purpose of Organization Unit:
The primary purpose of UNC Pembroke Athletics is to develop successful individuals through athletic competition, academic achievement, and social development. The department aims to provide a championship experience for its nearly 500 student-athletes while incorporating its core values of integrity, excellence, loyalty, sportsmanship, and accountability.
Primary Purpose of Position:
Teach undergraduate courses as assigned by the Department of Kinesiology Chair. Position also provides medical care for assigned teams within the Department of Athletics and lead other athletic trainers in their duties on behalf of UNC Pembroke Athletics.
Job Description:
The Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Training/Sports Medicine leads an Athletic Training department of 8 full-time athletic trainers that provides high-quality athletic healthcare and injury prevention for 16 varsity sports. This position also supports the University's academic mission by teaching 4 hours per semester of undergraduate coursework within the Department of Kinesiology. As a member of the Senior Athletics Staff, the Asst AD for Athletic Training/Sports Medicine oversees the operations, staffing, and compliance of the Athletic Training department, and works collaboratively with coaches, university departments, and other Athletics Administration. Evening, weekend, and travel commitments are required.
Athletic Training - 45%
- Provide comprehensive medical care for assigned teams to include all team activities and associated travel, including nights and weekends;
- Maintain complete electronic medical records in accordance with university, conference, NCAA, and federal standards;
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate student workers and assistant athletic trainers;
- Coordinate referrals to team physicians and other healthcare providers as needed;
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety protocols, including concussion management and EAPs, according to university and NCAA standards.
Teaching - 40%
- Teach undergraduate courses as assigned by the Department of Kinesiology Chair;
- Maintain up-to-date course materials and gradebook through Canvas;
- Provide timely feedback and support to students, both via email and office hours;
- Participate in curriculum development and departmental meetings as appropriate.
Leadership - 15%
- Serve as a member of the Senior Athletics Staff and actively participate in department planning and decision-making;
- Assist the Director of Athletics with the development, management, and evaluation of Athletic Training protocols and procedures;
- Oversee budget planning and purchasing for the Athletic Training department, including supplies, equipment, insurance policies, and other needs;
- Foster collaboration and communication between Athletic Training department, coaching staffs, Student Health Services and CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), and other university departments as needed;
- Represent the university and the Athletics Department at Conference meetings as appropriate;
- Carry out additional administrative duties as assigned by the Department Chair of Kinesiology or the Director of Athletics.
Management Preference:
Applicant must hold a Master's degree in athletic training, a sub discipline of Kinesiology, or a closely related field of study; 1-3 years of athletic training experience working with collegiate athletes and teaching experience, preferred.
Lic or Certifications Required by Statute or Regulation: Must have BOC certification and current CPR/AED certification; must be eligible by August 2025 or hold a current North Carolina athletic training license through NCBATE.
